An assailant shot two women in a car in Capitol Heights, Md., Sunday morning. One of the women was killed; the other woman was wounded.

Neighbors say they heard three gunshots at the corner of Drum Ave. and Heath Street shortly after 6:00 a.m., Sunday. Prince George’s County police officers responded to the scene, but the victims had driven away in their white SUV.

Police say the wounded victim drove about five miles from the scene of the shooting, winding up in the parking lot of the IHOP restaurant on Central Avenue near the Capital Beltway. Police were called to that scene.

“[Officers] responded to that location, and found two adult females suffering from gunshot wounds,” explained P.G. Police Dept. Cpl. Larry Johnson. “One was transported to a local hospital. The other was pronounced dead on [the] scene.”

After interviewing the survivor, police said they have determined that the shooter was known to the victims.

Neighbors say the woman who died, identified as 25-year-old Brittany McKinley, lived in (what they call a) “boarding house” in Capitol Heights, right at the corner of the shooting. She worked, they say, as a stripper at a club on Central Avenue known locally as Ervin’s, using the stage name Egypt.

On Saturday afternoon, Egypt came back to her Capitol Heights neighborhood with scratches, telling people she and two other women got in a physical fight with her sometime-boyfriend.

The shooting occurred the next morning.

Neighbors say the woman who made her living as a pole dancer had a young son, and she was a good mother to him.

Darlene Carroll, who lives several houses away from McKinley called the shooting “senseless.” Carroll, shaking her head, also said, “Her son didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye, you know. And family…is going to have to explain that to him. How do you explain that to a child?”

Police in Prince George’s County have classified the fatal shooting of the exotic dancer (and the wounding of the other woman) as “domestic” in nature.
