Age Is Just A Number | Serena Williams Covers Glamour Magazine

You all know how the saying goes “Age is just a number” well nothing can be more true when it comes to athlete and tennis superstar Serena Williams.

The 34-year-old superstar told interviewer at Glamour magazine that she’s actually a better player now than she was in her 20s, and she has the wins to prove it.

‘Who says that your thirties is when you’re supposed to be done? I would like to know who made that rule!’ she said in a new interview with Glamour. ‘[My mom said], “In your thirties you’re even stronger than in your twenties.” I didn’t believe her, but I have played better in my thirties. And I played pretty well in my twenties, don’t get me wrong! But my consistency is better, my momentum is better, my wins are quicker.’

In her 20s, between Serena and her sister Venus they were  undoubtedly a greatest players of their generation. Also noted, 13 of her 21 Grand Slam singles titles were earned before the age of 30 way back in September of 2011.

But since, in just under five years, she’s won eight more titles and seem to be unmatched in the sport, as well as two of her four Olympic gold medals. She’s also come incredible close to beating  Steffi Graf’s Grand Slam singles record of 22 wins.

Although she explains to Glamour that she’d love to tie or beat that record — covering the magazine’s  July issue — she knows it’s not the ‘end-all, be-all’, and she has already achieved so much with quite a bit to go, including an incredibly loyal fanbase.

‘I meet people who say, “Girl, I watch every match, and I pray for you.” I feel that energy and those prayers. Sometimes when I’m down on the court, in the back of my mind, I’m thinking, “They want me to win. Is there anything else I can give?” It encourages me to do better, to fight harder.

She addresses her feeling about, being name the top-earning female but making considerably less than male counterparts.
